All about Colmar
The town of Colmar in the Alsance region of France is the definition of Charming. At Christmas, Colmar is the most perfect little Christmas village, where children come by boat to sing Christmas carols down the canal and the town’s six Christmas markets merge together to form one giant Christmas wonderland. Colmar is known for its white wines and as one of the towns that inspired Disney’s Beauty and the Beast
Getting To Colmar
Colmar is easily accessible by train or car. We drove from Lucerne to Colmar and dropped off our rental car before taking the train to Paris. You will not need a car to get around Colmar as it is mostly a walking town. Colmar is only a short distance from Strasbourg and you can easily do a day trip to Colmar from Strasbourg or vis versa.
Best Time to Visit
Christmas! While Colmar is a charming town all year round, Christmas is a sight to see. If you're planning a trip to Colmar there is no better time to visit! However, if you are in the area during other times don't write off visiting Colmar as it is rich in history, culture, and sites.
Where to Stay in Colmar
One of my absolute favorite accommodations is located in Colmar. Wonderful little flat with a balcony over looking the canal where you can have a bite and a glass of wine while waiting to watch the carolers from the best view in town. ... link..
Eats, Drinks, and Do's
1. Christmas Markets- During Christmas, the entire town turns into a Christmas wonderland! There are ** Christmas markets throughout the town and they all flow into one another. Spend at least one day walking around the markets checking out the gifts, handcrafted goods, and foods. One of the best places to find great food and drink are throughout the Christmas markets! Try sweet or savory crepes, sausages, cookies, and mulled wine while you stroll the markets for Christmas gifts and keepsakes.
2. Try Alsatian Pizza- A little more fancy (for the area) Try one of the great salmon dishes, including the Salmon Ravioli.
3. Try Alsatian Wine- Located in the Singular Hotel, the restaurant is more upscale and offers high tea, coffee, smoothies, a bar, and high end meals. Try the Lamb!
4. Cervecería Baguales- A great chill hangout spot offering brews, appetizers, and pub food. Great place to meet other travelers and hangout.
5. Base Camp- Located next to the Erratic Rock Hostel, offering pizza, tacos, and other quick bites.
6. La Picada de Carlitos- A casual Chilean BBQ spot.
